3 Conflict Resolution Activities with readymade role play scenarios

What Do You See? – Conflict Resolution Perspective Activities

Use these quick, visual activities to help participants experience how perspective, focus, and prior experience shape what we notice—and how easily that can spark miscommunication and conflict at work.


Learning Objectives

  • Understand how perceptions differ based on viewpoint and prior experiences.
  • Develop awareness of how differing perspectives affect communication and conflicts.
  • Practice empathy and perspective-taking to improve collaboration.
  • Recognize selective attention and assumptions that influence misunderstandings.

Materials Needed

  • Large printout of the number “6” on A4 paper
  • Projector or printouts of the duck–rabbit ambiguous image (or similar illusions)
  • Single image with multiple focal points for display (e.g., busy street or workplace scene)
  • Writing materials (paper, pens) or digital devices for notes
  • Flipchart or whiteboard for group discussions

Activity 1: What Do You See? (6 vs 9)

Objective: Demonstrate how the same information can be interpreted differently depending on physical or mental perspective. Time: ~10 minutes

  1. Place the A4 sheet with the large “6” flat on the floor or a table.
  2. Split the group into two halves and stand them on opposite sides.
  3. Ask each side what number they see.
  4. Facilitate a short discussion acknowledging that both answers (6 or 9) can be correct based on perspective.

Debrief Questions

  • How does this relate to workplace disagreements?
  • How might we approach conversations differently to account for others’ perspectives?
  • What strategies help us pause and understand another person’s view before reacting?

Activity 2: Duck or Rabbit? Ambiguous Image

Objective: Highlight how prior experiences and focus shape perception and conclusions. Time: ~10 minutes

  1. Show the ambiguous image for ~5 seconds without discussion.
  2. Ask participants to jot down what they saw first.
  3. Reveal that some saw a duck, others a rabbit; then show how refocusing reveals both.
  4. Discuss how assumptions and focus influence interpretations.

Debrief Questions

  • What influenced your initial perception?
  • How can awareness of biases improve workplace communication?
  • How do we stay open to multiple interpretations?

Activity 3: Two Truths, One Scene

Objective: Reveal how different factual observations emerge based on focus and selective attention. Time: ~15 minutes

  1. Display a detailed image for 30 seconds.
  2. Ask half the group to focus on people; the other half on objects.
  3. Hide the image; have subgroups list what they observed.
  4. Compare lists and discuss why details were missed or noticed differently.

Debrief Questions

  • Why did each group miss some details while noticing others?
  • How does selective attention contribute to misunderstandings or conflicts?
  • How can we improve situational awareness and reduce miscommunication?

  • Invite personal examples; ensure psychological safety for open sharing.
  • Use visual aids and capture insights on a whiteboard in real time.
  • For virtual sessions, use breakout rooms and shared canvases.
