Materials Needed

  • Speech templates or prompts to guide participants’ preparation.
  • Timer or stopwatch to manage speech delivery time.
  • Voting slips or digital polling tools for anonymous leader selection.
  • Flip charts, markers, sticky notes, or digital collaboration platforms for team branding.

Activity 1: Election Time – Why Should You Lead?

Overview: Each participant runs for the role of team leader by preparing and delivering a persuasive speech highlighting their strengths and vision.

  1. Set the context: “Your team will lead a major company initiative. Who should lead?”
  2. Give participants 15 minutes to prepare a 2-minute speech addressing:
    • The strengths they bring to the team.
    • Examples of leadership or problem-solving experience.
    • Their first action as team leader.
  3. Each participant delivers their speech to the group within a 2-minute time limit.
  4. Optionally, have the team vote anonymously on the most compelling leader focusing on communication and clarity.

Facilitation Tips:

  • Encourage supportive listening and respectful feedback.
  • Use timers to keep speeches concise and equitable.
  • Help more reserved participants express ideas confidently with coaching or prompts.

Activity 2: Buy Our Team – Team Branding Exercise

Overview: Teams collaborate to create a compelling newspaper ad that “sells” their team as a high-performing asset.

  1. Set the scene: “Your team is featured in a business magazine selling your strengths to attract a buyer.”
  2. Divide into teams and assign roles such as writer, presenter, editor, creative director.
  3. Allow 15 minutes to brainstorm and craft a one-paragraph ad, headline, and tagline.
  4. Teams present their branding to the larger group.

Facilitation Tips:

  • Encourage creativity, clear messaging, and consensus-building within teams.
  • Highlight collective strengths and how diverse skills create value.
  • Use flip charts or digital boards for capturing ideas.
