What do you see?

What do you see?

Learning Objectives

  • Understand how perceptions differ based on viewpoint and prior experiences.
  • Develop awareness of how differing perspectives affect communication and conflicts.
  • Practice empathy and perspective‑taking to improve collaboration.
  • Recognize selective attention and assumptions that influence misunderstandings.

Materials Needed

  • Large printout of the number “6” on A4 paper
  • Projector or printouts of the duck‑rabbit ambiguous image (or similar illusions)
  • Single image with multiple focal points (e.g., busy street or workplace scene) for display
  • Writing materials (paper, pens) or digital devices for notes
  • Flipchart or whiteboard for group discussions

Activity 1: What Do You See? (6 vs 9)

Objective: Demonstrate how the same information can be interpreted differently depending on physical or mental perspective.

Time: 10 minutes  |  Materials: Large “6” printed on A4 paper

  1. Place the paper flat on the floor/ground.
  2. Divide the group into two halves; each stands on opposite sides of the paper.
  3. Ask each side: What number do you see?
  4. Facilitate a discussion acknowledging that both answers (6 or 9) are correct based on perspective.

Debrief Questions

  • How does this exercise relate to workplace disagreements?
  • How might we approach conversations differently to account for others’ perspectives?
  • What strategies can help us pause and understand another person’s view before reacting?

Activity 2: Duck or Rabbit? Ambiguous Image

Objective: Highlight how prior experiences and focus shape perception and conclusions.

Time: 10 minutes  |  Materials: Projector or printouts of the duck‑rabbit ambiguous image

  1. Show the image briefly (around 5 seconds) without discussion.
  2. Ask participants to silently jot down what they saw first.
  3. Reveal that some saw a duck, others a rabbit, then show how refocusing can reveal both.
  4. Facilitate a conversation on how assumptions and focus influence our interpretations.

Debrief Questions

  • What influenced your initial perception?
  • How can awareness of our biases improve workplace communication?
  • How can we remind ourselves to remain open to multiple interpretations?

Activity 3: Two Truths, One Scene

Objective: Reveal how different factual observations emerge based on focus and selective attention.

Time: 15 minutes  |  Materials: A detailed image with multiple focal points displayed on screen

  1. Display the image for 30 seconds.
  2. Instruct half the group to focus on people; the other half to focus on objects.
  3. Hide the image and have each subgroup write down what they observed.
  4. Compare lists and discuss why certain details were missed or noticed differently.

Debrief Questions

  • Why did each group miss some details while noticing others?
  • How does selective attention contribute to misunderstandings or conflicts?
  • What can we do to improve our situational awareness and reduce miscommunication?

Trainer Tips

  • Invite personal examples that link perspective and communication.
  • Set psychological safety for open sharing without judgment.
  • Use visual aids and whiteboarding to capture insights dynamically.
  • Add short energizers if discussions get intense.
  • For virtual sessions, use breakout rooms and shared digital canvases.

Practical Applications

  • Practice perspective‑taking in daily conversations.
  • Journal moments when you catch yourself making assumptions.
  • Hold team reviews on how seeing others’ views improves collaboration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run this session without projectors?

Yes. Use printed images and a floor‑placed “6” sheet. Small groups can rotate through stations.

Is the 6‑vs‑9 activity safe for tense teams?

It can be. Frame it as a neutral demo of perspective. Keep debrief focused on process, not people.

How big can the group be?

Medium to large groups work. Split into subgroups for Activities 2 and 3 to keep voices heard.

Virtual delivery tips?

Share images, use breakout rooms, and poll for first impressions before revealing multiple views.

What should I track after the workshop?

Watch for fewer assumption‑driven disagreements and more “help me see your view” language in meetings.
