Overview

This competitive yet collaborative activity simulates tensions between winning individually and cooperating as a group. Small teams make repeated decisions to maximize their own wins while navigating collaboration to improve overall group outcomes.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the pitfalls of short-term self-interest that can undermine collective gain.
  • Practice collective decision-making and strategic negotiation.

Materials Needed

  • Win As Much As You Can tally sheets (one per quartet)
  • Pencils or pens
  • Space for quartets to discuss confidentially yet remain close enough for cluster interaction
  • Timer or stopwatch

Setup & Directions

  1. Divide participants into 4 groups of four (quartets). Arrange seating accordingly.
  2. Distribute tally sheets and allow 5 minutes for study and partner discussion within quartets.
  3. Explain the activity title “Win as Much as You Can” and go over key rules emphasizing confidentiality, consensus decisions, and no cluster-wide communication except on specific rounds.
  4. Conduct 10 rounds of decision-making where quartets choose either X or Y each round.
  5. Include bonus rounds (Rounds 5, 8, and 10) where cluster-wide discussion is permitted before decision.
  6. After all rounds, each group calculates scores and the cluster net score is computed.

Payoff Schedule

  • 4 X’s: Lose $1.00 each
  • 3 X’s: Win $1.00 each; 1 Y: Lose $3.00
  • 2 X’s: Win $2.00 each; 2 Y’s: Lose $2.00 each
  • 1 X: Win $3.00; 3 Y’s: Lose $1.00 each
  • 4 Y’s: Win $1.00 each
