Cut That Cake – A Sweet Creative Thinking Challenge
Introduction
How often do our assumptions limit the possibilities we see? This simple yet clever challenge reveals how easily our thinking can be constrained by unspoken rules and habitual perspectives. The goal sounds straightforward: cut a round cake into eight equal slices with only three straight cuts. But can you break free from conventional thinking to find the solution? This activity is a fun metaphor for innovation and problem-solving in the workplace.Materials Needed
- One round cake (8–10 inches)
- Cake knife
- Paper plates or napkins (optional, for serving)
Setup Instructions
- Introduce the activity near the end of your training session or workshop as a light but powerful wrap-up.
- Say: “Before we enjoy this cake together, here’s one last creative challenge for you.”
- Explain the rule: You must cut the cake into eight equal pieces using no more than three straight cuts.
- Encourage teams or individuals to spend up to 5 minutes brainstorming ideas before making any cuts.
Rules
- Only three straight cuts are allowed.
- Each slice must be equal in size.
- No folding, stacking, or breaking apart the cake in any other way.
- All cutting must be done using the cake knife provided.
Trainer Tips
- Let participants embrace ambiguity and struggle productively without offering hints or clarifications early on.
- Use humor and suspense to build anticipation around the solution, making the reveal memorable.
- Encourage documenting team ideas or sketches during brainstorming for reflection.

Solution Explained
- First Cut: Slice the cake vertically down the middle—dividing it into two equal halves.
- Second Cut: Make another vertical cut at a 90-degree angle to the first, dividing the cake into four equal quarters.
- Third Cut: Slice horizontally through the middle (parallel to the table), dividing all four pieces into a top and bottom layer—resulting in eight equal pieces!
