Objective

Enhance trust, communication, and collaboration by having a blindfolded teammate assemble a simple puzzle using only verbal instructions from their partner.

Materials

  • One simple puzzle (≈20–30 pieces) per pair
  • Blindfolds (one per pair)
  • Clear, obstacle‑free space

Preparation

  • Select puzzles ~20–30 pieces—challenging but not frustrating.
  • Clear the area; remove tripping hazards.
  • Have enough blindfolds for each pair.
  • Brief on safety: slow movements, close listening, hands to the table.
  • Obtain verbal consent to wear blindfolds and offer opt‑outs or role swaps.

Step‑by‑step instructions

  1. Form teams: Divide into pairs.
  2. Assign roles: One partner is blindfolded and assembles; the other gives verbal‑only guidance (no touching pieces).
  3. Set up: Place all pieces within easy reach of the blindfolded participant.
  4. Run the round: On your signal, the guide gives clear, step‑by‑step instructions to complete the puzzle.
  5. Rules: Only the blindfolded person may touch the puzzle; guides stay hands‑off.
  6. Finish: First pair to complete correctly wins. Optionally, switch roles and repeat.
Language tips for guides
  • Use reference frames: “top/bottom/left/right,” clock‑face (“turn to 2 o’clock”), or edges/corners.
  • Chunk steps: identify piece type (edge/corner), then position, then connection.
  • Confirm understanding with brief check‑backs (e.g., “What do you feel on the edge?”).

Safety tips

  • Keep floors clear; provide ample space between pairs.
  • Encourage slow, deliberate movements; seated play is best.
  • Monitor comfort; pause if anyone feels unsafe or strained.
  • Participants can stop at any time.
  • Adapt roles or rules for visual impairments or sensitivities.

  • Coach guides to be concise and descriptive—not vague.
  • Invite blindfolded partners to ask clarifying questions.
  • Reinforce progress over speed; celebrate small wins.
  • Watch quieter pairs and encourage equitable talk time.
  • Reset frustrations: breathe, re‑explain, and resume.
