Overview

Design a fictional country—together. This exercise fosters creativity, collaboration, strategic negotiation, and team alignment as participants co‑create a nation with a clear identity, governance, and story.

Learning objectives

  • Strengthen team collaboration and decision‑making skills.
  • Enhance communication and negotiation within teams.
  • Inspire creativity and strategic thinking in group settings.
  • Promote respect for diverse viewpoints and inclusive dialogue.

Materials

  • Flip chart paper or poster boards (one per team).
  • Assorted markers.
  • Optional props: printed flags, maps, craft supplies.
  • Timer/stopwatch.

Setup & directions

  1. Form teams: Create groups of 3–6 participants.
  2. Scenario: “You’ve inherited a large unclaimed territory near Alaska. Collaborate to create a new nation.”
  3. Define deliverables: Each team decides its:
    • Country name and constitution/core values
    • Language(s) and monetary system
    • Government type and key resources/commodities
    • Military structure (optional)
    • National symbols: bird, flower, flag
  4. Creative phase: Teams design their country with flip charts and props.
  5. Present: Each team gets 5–7 minutes to present highlights and story.
  6. Debrief: Facilitate reflection on decision‑making, conflict resolution, creativity, and diversity.

Debrief & discussion

  • How did your team approach decisions—consensus or leader‑driven?
  • What disagreements arose and how were they resolved?
  • What creative ideas emerged unexpectedly?
  • How did values shape your constitution and governance?
  • How does this mirror collaboration and negotiation at work?

Alternative activities to deepen skills

1) Build a Team Culture

Task: Define an ideal workplace culture—values, rituals, onboarding, celebrations.

Discuss: How culture influences teamwork and performance.

2) Global Summit Simulation

Task: Represent fictional countries tackling a global agenda (e.g., climate, trade).

Play: Draft brief policies; debate, seek compromise, and build coalitions.
