Team Building Activity: Turn the Tablecloth
Objective
Promote teamwork, creative problem solving, non‑verbal coordination, and patience in a playful, physical challenge where teams flip a tablecloth using only their feet.
Materials
- One flannel‑backed round or square tablecloth per team (flannel side easy to identify)
Preparation & setup
- Choose a flat, clean floor with space for each team to lie in a circle comfortably.
- Give each team a flannel‑backed tablecloth; show which side is flannel (rougher).
- Brief everyone on safety and gentle, coordinated movement.
Step‑by‑step instructions
- Form teams: Groups of 5–6 people.
- Position the team: Teammates lie on their backs in a circle, feet touching or close together in the center.
- Place the tablecloth: Raise feet; drape the tablecloth over feet with the flannel side facing down toward the floor.
- The challenge: Without using hands, flip the tablecloth so the flannel side ends up facing up—feet only.
- Winning: First team to complete the flip wins. Run multiple heats if you have many teams.
Safety tips
- Floor must be clean, dry, and free of debris; avoid slippery surfaces.
- Encourage slow, deliberate leg movements to prevent bumps or strains.
- Allow rests or role swaps if anyone feels uncomfortable.
- Keep water and bags well away from the activity area.
Facilitator tips
- Ask teams to coordinate without talking—watch how rhythm and small cues emerge.
- Prompt creative strategies: micro‑tilts, shared counts, or synchronized pushes.
- Observe dynamics; call brief resets if coordination breaks down.
- Use upbeat energy and quick replays; encourage reflection after each attempt.

Silent mode
No talking allowed. Teams rely on timing cues like toe taps or breath counts.
Timer challenge
Give 90–120 seconds per attempt; fastest successful flip wins.
Size swap
Use smaller or larger cloths to change difficulty. Larger surfaces demand tighter coordination.

What kind of tablecloth works best?
A flannel‑backed cloth with a clearly different texture is ideal so teams can verify which side faces up or down.
How many people per team?
Five to six is a sweet spot. Fewer makes flipping harder; more can crowd the circle.
Is this safe on hard floors?
Yes if the surface is clean and dry. Avoid slippery floors and give space for legs to move without bumping.
Any no‑contact variant?
